Neiphiu Rio Calls NDPP-NPF Merger a ‘Historic Moment’ After Election Commission Approval

Kohima, May 26: Nagaland Chief Minister and NPF president Neiphiu Rio on May 26 described the Election Commission of India’s approval of the merger between the NDPP and NPF as a “historic moment”, saying the development marked the beginning of a “golden period” for the unified regional party.

Speaking during the party’s ticket distribution ceremony for the upcoming Town Council by-elections 2026, Rio said the Election Commission’s recent decision had officially recognised the Naga People’s Front as a unified regional political force, while the erstwhile Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party had ceased to exist as a separate entity.

The merger had been formally initiated in October last year, when the ruling NDPP, which had 32 MLAs, joined hands with the NPF, which then had two legislators.

Expressing satisfaction over his return to what he termed his “original political home”, Rio said he felt comfortable being back with the NPF and described the party as the genuine protector of Naga rights and identity.

He said the organisation had been established with the sole purpose of safeguarding the rights, dignity and identity of the Naga people and urged party leaders and workers to carry forward that responsibility with commitment and discipline.

Calling the present phase one of renewal, Rio appealed to party members to understand the organisation’s objectives and place public welfare above individual interests. He also reminded members that the party constitution required them to remain dedicated to public service and the protection of Naga interests.

The chief minister further urged municipal councillors to prioritise people-centric governance and adhere strictly to party guidelines while maintaining unity within the organisation.

Meanwhile, NPF secretary general Achumbemü Kikün said all procedural formalities related to the merger had now been completed following receipt of the official communication from the Election Commission.

During the programme, the party also introduced its candidates for the upcoming urban local body by-elections. Neichüu Kuotsü, Shikavi Kiba and Aling Lotha were formally presented and administered the oath by Pusazo Luruo.
