Allegations of Abuse at Nagaon Rehabilitation Centre Trigger Protests and Demand for Probe

Nagaon, June 1: Tension gripped an area in Assam’s Nagaon district after serious allegations of physical abuse and negligence emerged against a rehabilitation centre, prompting demands for a thorough investigation by authorities.

The controversy centres around the Wish Welfare Foundation rehabilitation centre located in Juria, where local residents and family members of inmates have accused the management of subjecting young individuals undergoing treatment for drug addiction to repeated physical assault.

The allegations came to light after a youth reportedly suffered a fractured leg following an alleged assault by staff members on Saturday night. The incident sparked outrage among relatives and local residents, who claimed that the centre had failed to provide proper care despite collecting significant fees from guardians.

According to the allegations, inmates were not only deprived of adequate medical attention and proper food but were also allegedly subjected to routine physical abuse during the night. Residents claimed that instead of receiving professional rehabilitation services, counselling and treatment, several inmates faced harsh treatment within the facility.

As reports of the alleged incident spread through the locality, tensions escalated, leading to protests and growing calls for action against the rehabilitation centre. Concerned residents demanded accountability and urged authorities to intervene without delay.

Local people have appealed to the police and district administration to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations. They have also sought strict action against those responsible and called for the closure of the facility if the claims are substantiated during the investigation.

Police are reportedly examining the matter, while no official statement has yet been issued by the authorities or the management of the rehabilitation centre regarding the allegations.
