Kohima, June 2: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on June 1 appointed five Members of the Legislative Assembly as advisors to various departments and carried out a reshuffle of portfolios, in a move aimed at utilising the experience of elected representatives in governance.
According to an official notification issued by Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen, the appointments and changes in responsibilities came into effect immediately.
Among the newly appointed advisors, Kuzholuzo Nienu was assigned the Science and Technology department, while Puthai Longon was given charge of Taxes. Picto Shohe was appointed advisor for New and Renewable Energy and the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, whereas Kikon was entrusted with the Forest and Food Processing departments.
The notification further stated that Nyushetho Nyuthe would continue as advisor to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and would additionally oversee Inland Waterways. However, he has been relieved of the New and Renewable Energy portfolio.
In another change, Dolie Yimkhiung was assigned as advisor to the Information and Public Relations, Social Welfare, and Soil and Water Conservation departments, marking a reshuffle of his earlier responsibilities.
The state government clarified that the advisors will provide suggestions and recommendations on matters referred to them by respective departments, with final decisions resting with the concerned ministers. It also stated that the advisors will not receive any additional salary, remuneration, allowances or perks beyond their entitlements as MLAs.
With these appointments, the number of advisors in the Rio-led government has increased to 29. The development marks the first expansion of advisory positions since the 2023 Assembly elections and is also notable as it brings two MLAs from the Naga People’s Front into the government structure following their party’s merger with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party in October last year.
