Guwahati, June 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 2 highlighted significant progress in financial inclusion in the state, stating that 91.7 per cent of women are now connected to the formal banking system.
Sharing the update on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister said that expanding access to banking services among women has played a key role in strengthening households and promoting inclusive development across Assam. He noted that financial empowerment at the household level contributes directly to broader socio-economic progress.
Sarma wrote that when women gain access to banking, entire families benefit from improved financial security and opportunities. He described the achievement as a reflection of the state’s commitment to empowering women and ensuring that development reaches every section of society.
According to the Chief Minister, a vast majority of women in Assam now hold savings bank accounts and passbooks, enabling them to access government welfare schemes, savings instruments and formal financial services more effectively.
The development is part of ongoing efforts by the state and central governments to deepen financial inclusion, promote financial literacy and integrate more citizens into the formal banking ecosystem. It also aligns with the administration’s broader focus on women’s empowerment and inclusive growth.
