Three Civilians Killed in Armed Attack in Manipur’s Kangpokpi District

Imphal, June 5: Three civilians were killed and several houses were damaged in an armed attack on a village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district in the early hours of Friday, raising renewed concerns over security in the region.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 4 am at Loibol village under the New Keithelmanbi area. Heavy firing was reported from the locality during the attack, followed by arson in which several houses were set ablaze.

The deceased have been identified as Letkhongam Haokip, Tinmary Haokip and Jangminlal Haokip, all residents of the affected village.

Local sources said panic spread in the area as villagers fled to safer locations amid the attack. The extent of property damage is yet to be officially assessed.

Security forces were deployed following the incident, and the situation is being closely monitored. However, authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the identity of those involved or the circumstances leading to the attack.

A Kuki civil society organisation, Kuki Inpi Manipur, strongly condemned the killings and expressed concern over the loss of civilian lives and destruction of property.

The organisation urged the Government of India and security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation, identify those responsible and ensure strict action under the law. It also called for enhanced security measures in vulnerable areas to prevent further incidents.

The incident comes amid continued sporadic violence and security challenges in parts of Manipur over recent months, with authorities maintaining heightened vigilance in affected districts.
