Guwahati, June 5: Four members of a family, including a 12-year-old boy, were killed after a devastating fire broke out at a rented residential compound in the Jalukbari area before dawn on June 5.
The deceased have been identified as Kuddus Ali (65), Kajoli (40), Safiqul (30) and Sahid Ali (12). The family, originally from Krishnai in Goalpara district, was residing in a rented accommodation at Jaymati Nagar in Jalukbari.
According to local residents, the fire erupted in the early hours of the morning and spread rapidly through the residential compound, engulfing at least two houses before occupants could escape. Many residents reportedly woke up to thick smoke and flames, but by then the blaze had already intensified.
The compound, owned by Rehena Choudhary, consists of 11 rooms occupied by around 10 tenant families. Eight families were present at the time of the incident.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel, along with teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rushed to the site and carried out firefighting and rescue operations.
Officials confirmed that the four victims were unable to escape and were found dead after the fire was brought under control. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined, and an investigation has been launched to ascertain its origin and the circumstances that led to its rapid spread.
The incident has left the locality in shock, with significant property damage reported in the affected section of the residential complex.
