The education authorities in Assam’s Bongaigaon district have instructed all government, provincialised and private schools to strictly adhere to the prescribed limits on the weight of school bags carried by students.
The directive was issued by District Elementary Education Officer and Inspector of Schools Pallavi Medhi through an official notification, in accordance with instructions received from the Elementary Education Department of the Assam government.
Under the order, schools have been directed to ensure that the weight of school bags remains within the limits specified for different classes. The maximum permissible weight has been fixed at 1.5 kg for students of Classes I and II, while those in Classes III and IV should carry bags weighing between 2 kg and 3 kg.
For higher classes, the notification prescribes a maximum weight of 4 kg for students of Classes VI and VII, 4.5 kg for Classes VIII and IX, and 5 kg for Class X students.
The instructions have been communicated to head teachers and principals of all schools in the district and are to be implemented with immediate effect.
The notification also cautions that institutions found violating the government guidelines may face action.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at reducing the physical strain on students and promoting their overall health and well-being by ensuring that school bags remain within the recommended weight limits.
