Tension gripped the Udharbond area of Assam’s Cachar district late on Tuesday night after a minor girl, who had reportedly been missing for nearly three months, was rescued from a hotel in Lathigram, triggering allegations of a commercial sexual exploitation racket operating from the premises.
According to local sources, the teenage girl was traced and rescued from Parijat Hotel. News of the recovery quickly spread, prompting a large number of residents to gather outside the establishment in protest.
Amid the demonstration, the crowd detained a local medical practitioner, identified as Dr. J.P. Das, who was allegedly linked to the suspected illegal activities. He was later handed over to the police.
Following reports of the unrest, the Additional Superintendent of Police of Cachar, accompanied by a heavy police contingent, reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The rescued minor has been placed under administrative custody and is undergoing the necessary legal and medical procedures. Meanwhile, Cachar Police have launched a formal investigation to establish the facts and identify all those allegedly involved in the suspected racket.
Local residents alleged that unlawful activities had been continuing at the hotel for a long time without any action from the authorities and demanded a thorough inquiry and strict legal action against those responsible.
The district police administration has not yet issued an official statement regarding the charges or any arrests in the case. Officials indicated that a detailed briefing would be provided after the completion of the preliminary investigation.
