Tawang to Host Second Edition of WPC Powerlifting Championship in August 2026, Says Pema Khandu

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on June 21 announced that the second edition of the World Powerlifting Congress (WPC) Tawang Powerlifting Championship will be organised in Tawang in August 2026.

The announcement followed a meeting between the Chief Minister and members of the World Powerlifting Congress, Tawang Unit, during which discussions were held on measures to promote sports and fitness among young people in the state.

Khandu said the championship aims to foster sporting excellence, encourage physical fitness and empower youth by providing aspiring athletes with an opportunity to display their abilities on a competitive platform.

Recalling the achievements of the inaugural edition, the Chief Minister said several participants had gone on to secure gold medals at state and national-level powerlifting events, earning accolades for Tawang and Arunachal Pradesh.

Expressing optimism about the growing interest in the sport, Khandu said such competitions are vital for identifying and nurturing talent while motivating youngsters to strive for excellence.

He extended his best wishes to the organisers and participants and expressed hope that the championship would continue to inspire the youth and further strengthen Arunachal Pradesh’s standing in competitive powerlifting.
