Udalguri-Sonitpur, June 22: Women associated with Barda BNM Industry under the Barda Industrial Cooperative Society in Udalguri district have set an example of self-reliance through a Government of India initiative aimed at promoting women’s economic empowerment.
More than 300 women have benefited from the programme by engaging in the production and marketing of indigenous products. With substantial support from the State Tribal Welfare Department, the women have been manufacturing organic products such as pickles of various flavours and incense sticks using environmentally friendly methods. Their products have found markets not only across Assam but also outside the state, bringing recognition and economic benefits to the producers.
Instead of seeking easier sources of income, the women have effectively utilised government schemes to establish home-based enterprises, achieving financial independence and inspiring others. Their organically prepared products have gained considerable popularity among consumers.
Around 20 women are directly involved in production activities on a regular basis, contributing significantly to the growth of the enterprise. Their commitment and work ethic have drawn appreciation from different sections of society.
Apart from pickles and incense sticks, the industry has also ventured into the production of fruit juices, which have received a positive response in the market. At a time when local markets are witnessing increasing participation from outside traders, the success of these indigenous women has emerged as a source of encouragement for local communities.
Established on July 13, 2023, the industry has made notable strides under the leadership of managing director Namita Saharia and accountant Marina Saikia, along with active members Purnima Nath, Reboti Mahato, Rita Mahato, Buli Choudhury, Uma Singh Karmakar, Mamoni Deka, Junu Mondal, Chipra Mondal, Puspa Mondal, Nirupama Tati and Monika Bora.
Recognising the achievements of the enterprise, Paneri-Cherfang MCLA Shyam Sundi has extended financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to support its further expansion.
The progress of Barda BNM Industry highlights how effective implementation of welfare schemes, combined with collective effort and determination, can enhance the livelihoods of rural women and contribute to sustainable economic development.
