Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the principal accused in the case related to the death of Assam’s celebrated singer Zubeen Garg, has approached the Supreme Court seeking bail after his plea was rejected by the Gauhati High Court.
According to reports, Mahanta moved the apex court after failing to obtain relief from the High Court. The matter has been scheduled for hearing before the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Earlier, a Special Fast Track Court had dismissed the bail applications of four other accused in the case — Sandipan Garg, Amritprabha Mahanta, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya — directing that they remain in judicial custody while the trial proceeds.
In a separate development, the Gauhati High Court had reserved its verdict on Shyamkanu Mahanta’s bail petition after hearing arguments from both the defence and the prosecution. The order had been expected to be delivered on May 29.
The proceedings were conducted before Justice Mitali Thakuria. During the hearing, counsel representing Mahanta sought his release on bail, while Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia opposed the plea and urged the court to deny the request.
The case, arising out of the death of renowned musician Zubeen Garg in September 2025, has been under consideration in different judicial forums and has drawn widespread public attention across Assam owing to the seriousness of the allegations.
Further developments in the matter are awaited as the Supreme Court prepares to hear Mahanta’s bail petition.
