Shillong, June 23: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on June 23 said the state government is adopting proactive measures to prepare for possible impacts of El Niño-linked climate uncertainties, with a focus on protecting water resources, agriculture, forests, public health and disaster management systems.
Chairing a high-level review meeting with key departments and representatives from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Chief Minister said that while the precise impact of El Niño cannot be predicted, preparedness remains the most effective strategy to deal with extreme weather conditions.
Sangma said the government is following a coordinated, whole-of-government approach by involving multiple departments, institutions, local bodies and communities to assess risks, formulate response strategies and minimise disruptions arising from adverse climatic conditions.
He stated that the initiative marks the beginning of a sustained effort to strengthen resilience across sectors and improve the state’s capacity to respond to climate-related challenges.
“Our goal is to build resilience, protect livelihoods, secure water resources and ensure that Meghalaya is ready for any challenge that may come our way,” the Chief Minister said.
The state government is expected to continue monitoring evolving weather patterns and strengthen preparedness mechanisms in collaboration with relevant agencies and stakeholders in the coming months.
