Guwahati, June 26: A serious case of alleged kidnapping, wrongful confinement, assault, extortion and death threats has surfaced in Guwahati, raising concerns over law and order in the city.
The victim, Noman Dewan, a resident of Fancy Bazar and an active BJP worker, has alleged that he was held captive and brutally assaulted by a group of 25 to 30 people for nearly four hours inside Break Point Sports Club near Nehru Stadium on B. Barooah College Road.
In his complaint, Dewan stated that he was unlawfully confined within the club premises and subjected to severe physical and mental torture by the accused. He has named Anil Basfor, Pawan Basfor, Manjeet Basfor and Suhel Basfor as the main accused in the case.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly assaulted him and demanded money while he was being held captive. Dewan claimed the incident stemmed from a dispute dating back nearly four years.
The case has also raised questions over how such an alleged assault could occur inside a sports club without immediate police intervention. Dewan further alleged that police were not informed during the incident and that he was eventually rescued only after his father approached the authorities.
A formal complaint was lodged on June 22 at Pan Bazar Police Station and was later transferred to Paltan Bazar Police Station after jurisdictional clarification.
The victim has also alleged that no significant action has been taken against the accused so far, despite the complaint, and claimed that he and his family have continued to receive death threats from those allegedly involved.
Dewan is reportedly associated with the BJP and has participated in political activities and election campaigns for Central Guwahati MLA Vijay Gupta. Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations or the status of the investigation.
