Tension Escalates Along India-Bangladesh Border in Assam’s Sribhumi Amid Alleged Pushback Dispute

Sribhumi, June 27: Tension gripped the India-Bangladesh border in Assam’s Sribhumi district after an alleged pushback attempt led to a face-off between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in the Bilbari border sector.

The situation remained tense throughout the day after reports claimed that the confrontation began when an attempt was made to push a group of Bangladeshi nationals towards the New Pallathal area on the Bangladesh side of the international border.

According to the reports, the BGB objected to the alleged move and stopped the group from entering Bangladeshi territory, resulting in a standoff between the border forces.

As information about the incident spread, residents of nearby border villages reportedly assembled near the border carrying knives, sticks and bamboo poles in support of the BGB.

Reports further stated that personnel from the BGB’s Pallathal border outpost repeatedly issued announcements through loudspeakers, urging the BSF not to carry out any alleged “illegal pushback” and to withdraw from the area. The BGB also reportedly warned that it would be compelled to open fire if the situation escalated further and if the people were not moved away.

The incident significantly heightened tensions along the international border in Sribhumi district, with the situation remaining sensitive following the confrontation.
