New Delhi, June 29: Manipur Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi on Sunday took oath as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha after being elected unopposed to the state’s lone seat in the Upper House.
The oath was administered by Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan during a ceremony held in the Rajya Sabha Chamber, where six other newly elected and re-elected members also assumed office.
Sharda Devi took the oath in Manipuri, becoming the only representative from Manipur among the seven parliamentarians sworn in on the occasion. The remaining members represented Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
Several senior leaders and dignitaries were present during the ceremony, including Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Leader of the House and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, Rajya Sabha members Jairam Ramesh and Praful Patel, Secretary General P.C. Mody, along with senior officials of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.
Sharda Devi secured the Rajya Sabha seat without a contest, marking a notable political achievement for the BJP in Manipur and strengthening the party’s representation in the Upper House of Parliament.
