Six Cattle Rescued After Police Chase Ends in Crash on NH-127B in Assam’s Dhubri

A suspected cattle smuggling attempt was foiled in Assam’s Dhubri district after a high-speed police pursuit ended with a vehicle crashing into a roadside shop on National Highway 127B, leading to the rescue of six cattle and heightened security in the Balajan area.

The operation began late on Wednesday night after Balajan police received specific intelligence regarding the alleged illegal transportation of livestock. Acting on the information, officers established a checkpoint on the NH-127B flyover to intercept the suspected vehicle.

During the operation, police signalled a speeding Maruti WagonR to stop. However, the driver allegedly ignored the instructions and accelerated in an attempt to evade the checkpoint, prompting officers to launch a chase as the vehicle headed towards the Balajan market.

The pursuit ended when the driver reportedly lost control of the car, causing it to ram into a roadside shop. Amid the confusion following the collision, the driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped under the cover of darkness.

Police teams from Golokganj and Shoulmari police stations soon arrived at the scene to assist in the operation. A search of the crashed vehicle resulted in the rescue of six cattle, which investigators suspect were being transported illegally. The animals have been taken into safe custody.

The incident briefly created tension in the Balajan market area, following which police maintained a strong presence to ensure law and order.

Authorities have seized the vehicle and registered a case under the relevant legal provisions. A search has been launched to trace the absconding driver, while investigators are probing the alleged cattle smuggling network linked to the operation.
