Guwahati, July 4: Guwahati Police have arrested five people and recovered counterfeit currency with a face value of Rs 13.5 lakh during two separate operations conducted by Dispur Police Station on June 30 and July 1, as part of an ongoing crackdown on fake currency rackets.
Speaking to reporters, Guwahati East Deputy Commissioner of Police Tabu Ram Pegu said two criminal cases have been registered in connection with the seizures. Preliminary findings suggest that the accused had allegedly planned to cheat unsuspecting individuals by using counterfeit currency in targeted transactions.
According to the DCP, the accused in the first case had travelled to Guwahati from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh under the pretext of purchasing gold. In the second operation, another group had reportedly arrived from Assam’s Darrang district with a similar objective.
Apart from the counterfeit notes, police also recovered several incriminating items during the raids, which are now being examined as part of the investigation.
Pegu said the seized fake notes were of poor quality and were unlikely to enter normal circulation through routine transactions. However, investigators believe the accused intended to use the counterfeit currency to deceive specific victims during planned deals.
Police have launched a detailed investigation to trace the origin of the fake currency and identify others connected to the racket. “The investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the fake currency and identify everyone involved. We are confident of dismantling the entire network soon,” the DCP said.
