Work Begins on Vertical Garden Under Guwahati’s Bhagadatta Flyover

Work has begun on developing a vertical garden beneath the Bhagadatta Flyover in Guwahati’s Supermarket area as part of a major urban greening and beautification initiative aimed at enhancing public spaces across the city.

The project will transform the space beneath the flyover by installing vertical green structures and ornamental plants on the flyover pillars and surrounding areas. Officials said the initiative is intended to improve the city’s appearance while also supporting environmental sustainability by reducing dust levels and improving the local microclimate.

The Bhagadatta Flyover, one of Guwahati’s busiest transport corridors, has been chosen as one of the first locations because of its strategic importance and heavy daily commuter movement. Once completed, the project is expected to create a cleaner, greener and more visually appealing environment for residents and visitors.

Officials said the vertical garden is part of a broader plan to expand green infrastructure in Guwahati in response to rapid urbanisation. More than 20 similar vertical gardens are proposed to be developed beneath flyovers and at other prominent public locations across the city in a phased manner.

The overall project is estimated to cost around ₹25 crore and is expected to significantly improve the city’s urban landscape while promoting sustainable development.

Authorities said the progress of the Bhagadatta Flyover project will be reviewed before extending the initiative to other locations across Guwahati.
