Himanta Biswa Sarma mourns demise of Padma Shri awardee Geeta Upadhyay

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 13 expressed grief over the death of noted educationist, author and Padma Shri awardee Geeta Upadhyay, remembering her as an eminent literary figure whose work made a lasting contribution to Assamese and Nepali literature.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister said he was deeply saddened by her passing and paid tribute to her lifelong service to education and literature.

Sarma said Upadhyay’s remarkable contributions had earned her the Padma Shri and the 2026 Sati Sadhani Award. He added that her literary legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

The Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to her family, admirers and well-wishers during their bereavement and prayed for the eternal peace of her soul.

Geeta Upadhyay earned widespread respect for her work as an educationist and author, enriching both Assamese and Nepali literature through her writings. Her death drew condolences from across Assam, with many paying tribute to her enduring contribution to the state’s literary and educational landscape.
