Assam’s flood situation continued to deteriorate after widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall over the past four days, prompting fresh weather and flood warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Central Water Commission (CWC).
The highest rainfall during the period was recorded at Sonari AEGCL in Charaideo district, which received 197.5 mm between July 18 and 19. Between July 19 and 20, Kukurmara–Mirza AEGCL in Kamrup recorded the highest rainfall at 165.5 mm, followed by Bokakhat with 130.5 mm, Guwahati with 124.5 mm and Mariyani AEGCL in Jorhat with 122 mm.
The IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across most parts of Assam on July 20. Eastern districts, including Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, are expected to witness the highest rainfall activity, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in Golaghat and Sivasagar.
The Central Water Commission said the Dikhow River in Sivasagar district is flowing above its Highest Flood Level (HFL). Four other rivers—the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat in Jorhat, Burhidihing in Dibrugarh, Disang in Sivasagar and Dhansiri in Golaghat—are also flowing above their respective danger levels.
Meanwhile, the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) has issued Low to Moderate Flood Alerts for Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, Chirang, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia through its Flood Early Warning System (FLEWS).
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel near inundated roads and riverbanks, and follow official advisories as active monsoonal conditions continue to affect the state.
