The flood situation in Assam deteriorated further on July 23, with six more people losing their lives over the past 24 hours, taking the cumulative flood-related death toll to 47. More than 7.21 lakh people are now affected across 11 districts, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The fresh fatalities include four deaths in Sivasagar district and two in Charaideo.
ASDMA reported that the floods have affected over 7.21 lakh people across 37 revenue circles and 883 villages in Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Charaideo, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Nagaon, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Karbi Anglong and Tinsukia districts.
Sivasagar continues to be the worst-hit district, with nearly 3.75 lakh people affected, followed by Charaideo with 1.86 lakh and Jorhat with around 1.15 lakh. The affected population has risen significantly from 6.43 lakh across 10 districts reported a day earlier.
Relief operations are continuing across the state, with 103 relief camps currently sheltering 24,124 displaced people. Authorities have also established 255 relief distribution centres to provide essential supplies to flood-affected residents.
The deluge has inundated 25,375.44 hectares of agricultural land, causing extensive damage to standing crops and adding to the hardship faced by farming communities.
Several major rivers continue to flow above the danger level amid persistent rainfall. These include the Burhidihing at Khowang in Dibrugarh district, the Kikhor at Sivasagar, the Desang at Nanglamuraghat in Sivasagar, the Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, and the Kushiyara at Sribhumi.
Authorities have also reported damage to infrastructure from different parts of the state as rescue, relief and restoration efforts continue in the flood-affected areas.
