Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered a major landslide in Sargapur under the Basistha area of Guwahati, leaving several families displaced and highlighting the growing risk posed by relentless monsoon showers across the city. While multiple localities have reported landslides following days of incessant rain, Sargapur has emerged as one of the worst-affected areas.
Residents said the landslide has severely disrupted daily life, with many struggling to access food, drinking water and other essential supplies. Several families have been forced to leave their homes amid fears of further slope failures as heavy rain continues.
One of the worst-affected structures is a three-storey building where the lower two floors have been buried under a massive accumulation of debris. The top floor, which also functions as a community hall and provides shelter to several families, has suffered extensive damage, raising serious concerns over its structural stability and the safety of those staying there.
Locals have also expressed concern over the safety of a nearby electricity substation, warning that another landslide could damage the installation and create additional hazards for the surrounding neighbourhood.
The district administration has set up a relief camp at the community hall to accommodate families whose houses have either been destroyed or rendered unsafe by the landslide. Relief materials, including candles, bread and drinking water, are being distributed to affected residents.
Despite the relief measures, anxiety remains high as heavy rainfall continues. Many residents fear that another spell of intense rain could trigger fresh landslides and bring down houses that are still standing. They have urged the Assam government to ensure timely relief, rehabilitation and long-term measures to safeguard vulnerable settlements from recurring landslide threats.
