More than 200 participants, including school and college students as well as Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel, took part in a Kargil Vijay Diwas Rain Run organised at Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar on Saturday to commemorate India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War.
The event featured 2 km, 5 km and 10 km race categories and was flagged off by Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung and Sports Minister Kento Jini. Participants joined the run to pay tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the conflict.
Speaking to the media, Natung said Kargil Vijay Diwas marks India’s victory in the 1999 war and honours the courage, dedication and sacrifice of the country’s armed forces.
Athlete Joti Mane said such events help strengthen the spirit of patriotism while recognising the invaluable contribution made by India’s soldiers in safeguarding the nation.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed annually on July 26 to commemorate India’s victory in the Kargil War, during which the Indian armed forces recaptured strategic positions in the Kargil sector following Pakistani intrusions in 1999.
