Three prisoners lodged in the captive ward of Shaheed Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital in Assam’s Golaghat district escaped early on July 26 after allegedly exploiting a security lapse. The trio also fled on a motorcycle belonging to the police personnel deployed at the hospital.
The escaped prisoners have been identified as Najibur Rahman, Rupam Kalita and Ajay Gowala. Rahman is the prime accused in the Golaghat triple murder case.
According to preliminary information, the three men had been admitted to the hospital for medical treatment and were being guarded in the prisoner ward. They allegedly escaped at around 5 am after the police personnel on duty reportedly fell asleep. During the escape, they also took the police motorcycle parked on the hospital premises.
Following the incident, police launched a massive search operation and set up checkpoints across Golaghat district to trace the fugitives. Raids are being carried out at multiple locations, while neighbouring districts have been alerted to assist in the search.
The escape has raised serious concerns over security arrangements at the hospital and the vigilance of the police personnel assigned to guard the prisoners. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the security breach.
