IIT Guwahati Mourns Death of BTech Student, Reaffirms Mental Health Support on Campus

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a third-year BTech student, describing the incident as a profound loss to the institute’s community. The student passed away on Sunday, July 26, and the institute said it is extending full support to the bereaved family while cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.

In an official statement, IIT Guwahati said the student’s parents are on their way to the campus and that the institute has remained in close contact with the family to provide all necessary assistance during this difficult period. It added that further details would be shared only after the police complete their investigation.

Calling for restraint, the institute appealed to students, staff and the public to avoid speculation until the facts surrounding the incident are established. It also conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends and all those affected by the loss.

Reiterating its commitment to student welfare, IIT Guwahati highlighted the mental health support systems available on campus. These include the SAATHI Counselling Club and the Centre for Holistic Wellbeing, which provide access to licensed counsellors and psychiatrists, as well as round-the-clock online counselling services.

The institute said its mental health framework includes four full-time counsellors and mandatory counselling sessions for all students. These interactions are scheduled to avoid disruption to academic activities and are designed to identify early signs of emotional distress in a confidential and non-stigmatising environment.

IIT Guwahati also conducts ice-breaking sessions and operates a Peer Mentorship Programme for newly admitted students to help them build meaningful connections with faculty members and fellow students while easing their transition into campus life.

Encouraging students to seek help whenever needed, the institute urged anyone experiencing emotional distress, or those concerned about the wellbeing of a friend, to make use of the available support services. It reiterated that no student should have to face personal challenges alone and affirmed its commitment to maintaining a supportive and caring campus environment.
