A young Kabaddi player was killed and two others were injured after a speeding vehicle allegedly struck them on a national highway near the Basistha–Sarusajai stretch in Guwahati on Monday night. Police have launched a search for the driver, who fled the scene after the accident.
The deceased has been identified as Vaishnavi Saha, a resident of Dhirenpara. According to preliminary information, she died on the spot after being hit by the vehicle shortly after leaving a practice session at the Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai.
The accident occurred while the players were returning from the sports complex. Eyewitnesses alleged that the vehicle was travelling at high speed when it rammed into them on the highway.
Police said the driver escaped immediately after the collision, leaving the victims at the scene. The impact proved fatal for Vaishnavi, who was declared dead on the spot.
The two injured players, identified as Vidya and Manisha, both residents of Amingaon, were shifted to a hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
Basistha Police later identified the vehicle involved as bearing registration number AS 26 C 4335. According to officials, it was travelling from Lakhra towards Khanapara when the accident occurred.
Police have seized the vehicle and launched an operation to trace the absconding driver. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
