Members of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday pledged to donate one month’s salary towards flood relief, with legislators from both the ruling party and the Opposition extending financial support to people affected by the devastating floods across the state.
The announcement received unanimous backing in the Assembly. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed said his party’s legislator would contribute one month’s salary, while AIUDF members also announced that all MLAs from the party would donate their salaries for the relief effort.
The AIUDF further stated that, in addition to party president Badruddin Ajmal’s earlier personal contribution of ₹2 crore, the party would provide an additional ₹2 lakh to support flood relief measures.
The collective commitment comes as Assam continues to battle severe flooding, with Upper Assam among the worst-affected regions.
The ruling BJP has also intensified its relief efforts through a statewide fundraising campaign. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the party aims to distribute clothing to two lakh women and two lakh children in the flood-hit districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat.
According to the Chief Minister, the initiative is expected to cost around ₹12 crore. He appealed to BJP workers to contribute, adding that party members from outside Assam had also assured support. Sarma expressed confidence that the target amount would be raised within the next few days.
He said contributions of up to ₹2,000 could be handed over to local BJP MLAs, while larger donations should be deposited directly into the Assam BJP’s designated bank account.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika announced that the state government would begin distributing paddy seeds and seedlings free of cost to flood-affected farmers in Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo within the next four to five days. He said he would personally oversee the distribution process.
Earlier this week, AIUDF president and former Lok Sabha MP Badruddin Ajmal announced a personal contribution of ₹2 crore towards flood relief and rehabilitation after visiting affected areas in Charaideo and Sivasagar. He also urged the Centre to announce a special relief package of ₹10,000 crore for Assam, stating that the scale of destruction called for long-term rehabilitation and a coordinated humanitarian response.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who recently visited flood-affected areas, reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to assisting Assam. He said the Union government is working closely with the state administration to ensure timely relief operations and the uninterrupted supply of essential assistance to affected families.
