Assam film producer Riniki Bhuyan Sharma has announced a contribution of ₹1 crore from the proceeds of Kokadeuta Nati Aru Hati-2 for the reconstruction and restoration of 50 schools damaged in the recent floods across the state.
Sharma, who is also the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, shared the announcement on X, saying the production house stood with the people of Assam during the ongoing recovery process. She said the contribution would be used to support the rebuilding of educational institutions affected by the floods as part of the state’s rehabilitation efforts.
The announcement comes at a time when political leaders have been calling for greater financial assistance for flood-hit Assam. On July 28, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi urged the Centre in the Lok Sabha to announce a special relief package for the state. Referring to the widespread destruction caused by the floods, he said more than 70 people had lost their lives and appealed for additional Central support to assist those affected.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, meanwhile, said the state government was continuing rescue and relief operations on a “war footing”. Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for closely monitoring the flood situation, Sarma said government teams had reached every affected village, restored electricity in most flood-hit areas and ensured that displaced families in relief camps had access to food, medical care and dedicated facilities for children.
He added that relief measures would continue round the clock and said the government would prepare a comprehensive rehabilitation plan with public participation.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the floods continue to affect more than 4.45 lakh people across six districts. Official figures show that 631 villages remain inundated, while 184 relief camps and relief distribution centres are currently providing shelter to nearly 28,700 displaced residents.
