A minor girl was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the residence of the director of Borakhai Tea Estate in Assam’s Cachar district on Wednesday, July 29, prompting police to launch an investigation into the incident.
The deceased, identified as Jonaki Orang, had reportedly been working at the bungalow of Borakhai Tea Estate director Rajan Sudan for nearly six months. The residence is situated in the Barkhola Assembly constituency.
According to her family, Jonaki left her home at around 8 am on Wednesday for work as usual. About two hours later, they were informed that she had reportedly fallen unconscious after feeling dizzy. When family members reached the tea estate, they were told that she had already been taken to the Dak Bungalow Primary Health Centre, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Giving his version of events, Rajan Sudan said he had spoken to Jonaki earlier that morning. He claimed that he later heard cries from behind the bungalow and rushed to a storeroom, where he allegedly found her hanging. He said she was immediately brought down with the help of other staff members and taken to the hospital, but doctors declared her dead.
The incident has raised questions, with the victim’s family alleging discrepancies in the circumstances surrounding her death. They claimed Jonaki did not own or use a mobile phone. However, they alleged that a mobile handset was found near her after she was brought down and further claimed that around 48 calls had been made from the device before the incident. Police have not made any official statement regarding these allegations.
Police have registered a case and begun an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the minor’s death. Officials said the exact cause of death would be determined after the investigation is completed and the post-mortem examination report is received. No arrests have been made in connection with the case so far.
