Guwahati, July 30: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Assam and other northeastern states over the next three to four days, raising concerns over flooding, flash floods, waterlogging and landslides in vulnerable areas.
According to the weather department, thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall are likely between July 30 and August 1 in parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Weather systems over neighbouring states are also expected to influence several districts of Upper Assam.
An orange alert has been issued for Tinsukia district in Assam. Similar alerts have been sounded for Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha districts of Nagaland, where intense rainfall and runoff could impact the adjoining Assam districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.
The IMD has also predicted heavy rain in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang, Lohit, Namsai, Longding, Papumpare, Lower Subansiri and Lower Dibang Valley districts. Runoff from these areas is expected to affect Tinsukia, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts in Assam.
The department said many parts of the affected districts in Arunachal Pradesh could receive between 6 cm and 11 cm of rainfall per day, while isolated locations, particularly Papumpare district, may record very heavy rainfall ranging from 12 cm to 20 cm.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) cautioned that the expected rainfall could worsen waterlogging, trigger urban flooding and flash floods, slow traffic movement and increase the risk of localised landslides in susceptible areas. In response to the forecast, district administrations have been placed on alert, while residents of low-lying and hillside regions have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and follow official weather advisories and directions issued by local authorities.
