Ceiling collapses in GMCH Plastic Surgery department, four patients injured

Four patients were injured after a section of the ceiling collapsed inside the Plastic Surgery department of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Thursday, triggering panic among patients and hospital staff.

According to preliminary reports, a portion of the ceiling suddenly gave way and fell inside the ward, striking patients who were undergoing treatment. The incident created chaos in the department before hospital staff rushed to the scene and assisted those affected.

The injured patients were immediately given medical treatment, and hospital authorities said all four are in stable condition.

Initial reports indicated that the ceiling of the Plastic Surgery department had been in a deteriorated state for a considerable period. The collapse is suspected to have resulted from inadequate repair and maintenance of the structure.

The incident has sparked fresh concerns over the condition and upkeep of infrastructure at one of Assam’s premier government healthcare institutions. The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be officially established, and further details, including whether an inquiry will be ordered, are awaited.
