The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will convene its five-day Autumn Session from August 24 to 28 after the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) unanimously approved the schedule on July 31. Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said every legislator, irrespective of party affiliation, would be given sufficient opportunity to raise issues of public importance during the proceedings.
Addressing reporters after the BAC meeting, the Speaker acknowledged concerns over the session’s duration, which includes three days of government business and two days dedicated to private members’ business. He said efforts would be made to ensure that members from both the treasury and opposition benches receive adequate time to present their views in the House.
The BAC meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prestone Tynsong, Leader of the Opposition Mukul M. Sangma, Opposition Chief Whip Charles Pyngrope, Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma and other members.
Proceedings will commence on August 24 with the presentation of the BAC report, tabling of ordinances, notifications, reports and rules, introduction of government bills, presentation of the Supplementary Demands for Grants and Supplementary Appropriation for the 2026-27 financial year, along with obituary references.
Private members’ business has been scheduled for August 25 and August 27, when members will take up private bills, motions and resolutions. Government business on August 26 will focus on voting on the Supplementary Demands for Grants.
On the concluding day, August 28, the Assembly will continue voting on the supplementary grants, introduce and consider the Meghalaya Appropriation (No. III) Bill, 2026, take up government legislation for passage and conclude the session with prorogation or adjournment sine die.
The Speaker noted that the session calendar received unanimous approval from all members of the Business Advisory Committee, including representatives of the Opposition.
