AGARTALA, Aug 1: Tripura achieved a major milestone in renewable energy generation after the cumulative installed capacity of rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana crossed 15 MW, reflecting the state’s steady progress towards decentralised and sustainable power generation.
Official data as of July 27 showed that 17,330 applications had been registered under the scheme. Of these, 7,846 applications had been submitted, proposing a total solar capacity of 24,733 kWp. Rooftop solar systems had already been installed in 4,460 households, creating a cumulative installed capacity of 15,300 kWp, or 15.3 MW.
The scheme allowed households to generate electricity through rooftop solar panels for their own use while exporting surplus power to the grid through net metering. Officials said the initiative had gradually transformed consumers into power producers, reduced dependence on conventional electricity sources and promoted the use of clean energy.
The programme also delivered significant financial benefits. A total of 3,853 consumers had received subsidies exceeding ₹32.52 crore, reducing the installation cost of rooftop solar systems and lowering household electricity expenses.
Implemented by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited under the leadership of Managing Director Biswajit Basu, with guidance from Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath and Power Secretary Abhishek Singh, the scheme continued to expand its reach across the state.
During the April-June 2026 quarter, 1,679 consumers reduced their electricity bills to zero and became eligible to receive a combined ₹5.79 lakh for supplying surplus electricity to the grid. Officials said the amount would be credited to their accounts shortly.
The state government said it would continue encouraging households to adopt rooftop solar systems, with thousands of applications still in the pipeline as Tripura advanced towards a cleaner and more self-reliant energy future.
