Guwahati, Aug 2: The devastating floods in Assam have claimed 82 lives and affected more than 1.14 lakh people across 25 districts since April 29, according to the latest flood situation update released by the state government.
The floods have impacted 77 revenue circles and 2,255 villages, while 29,985 people have been evacuated from affected areas as rescue and relief operations continue.
The state government said 222 relief camps are currently sheltering 72,532 displaced people. In addition, 183 relief distribution centres have been set up to provide essential supplies and other assistance to flood-affected families.
The affected districts are Goalpara, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Bongaigaon, Charaideo, Nalbari, Bajali, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Baksa, Sivasagar, Darrang, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Hojai, Golaghat, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan and Majuli.
According to the update, no person is currently reported missing. However, the floods have caused widespread destruction to residential properties and public infrastructure.
Official figures show that 2,797 houses have been completely destroyed, while another 10,760 have sustained partial damage.
The state has recorded 82 flood-related deaths so far, with Sivasagar accounting for the highest number at 42, followed by Charaideo with nine. Three deaths each were reported from Dhemaji and Golaghat, two each from Sonitpur and Jorhat, and one each from Nagaon, Karbi Anglong and Kamrup.
Authorities said relief, rescue and rehabilitation efforts are continuing across the affected districts as the government assesses the full extent of the damage and provides assistance to displaced families.
