Guwahati, Aug 3: The Assam government will construct a one-kilometre road leading to the residence of Rupamoni Gorh, the first woman from the state to scale Mount Everest, and name it in her honour, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced.
The decision has been taken to recognise Gorh’s historic accomplishment and honour her determination, courage and contribution to inspiring young people, especially women, across Assam.
Rupamoni Gorh scripted history on May 21, 2026, when she became the first woman from Assam to summit Mount Everest as part of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) All-Women’s Everest Expedition.
The proposed road in Lakhimpur will serve as a permanent tribute to her achievement and commemorate a milestone that brought pride to the state.
According to the state government, the initiative reflects its commitment to recognising individuals whose achievements have earned national and international recognition for Assam while motivating the younger generation to pursue ambitious goals.
The government said Gorh’s journey from Assam to the summit of the world’s highest peak stands as an example of how determination, discipline and perseverance can help overcome challenges and achieve extraordinary success.
Naming the road after her is also intended to serve as a lasting symbol of women’s empowerment and encourage future generations to strive for excellence across different fields.
The initiative forms part of the Assam government’s broader effort to celebrate the accomplishments of people from the state in sports, culture and other professions while fostering a more aspirational and achievement-oriented society.
