Udalguri-Sonitpur, Aug. 3: Assam Police seized 90.16 grams of suspected heroin and arrested two women during a special operation in Orang town of Udalguri district, officials said on Monday.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Orang Police conducted a naka-checking operation on National Highway 15 in front of Orang Higher Secondary School, where the suspected contraband was recovered.
Police estimated the international market value of the seized heroin at around Rs 70 lakh.
The operation was led by Orang Police Station Officer-in-Charge Manoj Kumar Das, with Additional Superintendent of Police Anita Konwar, Sub-Inspector Jitumoni Kalita, Lance Naik Biswajit Sutradha, Woman Police Constable Bhanita Nath, Abdul Sattar, Home Guard Manik Chandra De and personnel of the 27th Assam Police Battalion assisting in the operation.
The arrested women were identified as Rimpa Hazarika (47), a resident of Khatkhati Tila Basti under Khatkhati Police Station in Karbi Anglong district, and Tanju Baby (35), a resident of Kokarabori village under Boko Police Station in Kamrup district.
A case has been registered at Orang Police Station under Sections 21(b) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police said both the accused were subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
