GUWAHATI, Aug 4: Former Leader of the Opposition and former Nazira MLA Debabrata Saikia criticised the Assam government over what he described as inadequate relief measures for flood-affected families, alleging that many displaced people continue to live on roadsides without sufficient shelter.
After visiting flood-hit areas from Garmur to Chengdhara village in Nazira constituency on Tuesday, Saikia said overnight rain had worsened the condition of families sheltering by the roadside after losing their homes. He said many were using bamboo, tin sheets, tarpaulins and bed sheets to build makeshift shelters for themselves and their livestock.
Saikia said he distributed one tarpaulin each to around 100 affected families during his visit to provide temporary relief.
He alleged that despite repeatedly informing the district administration about the situation, adequate numbers of tarpaulins had not been supplied and sufficient relief camps had not been established.
Urging the authorities to intensify relief efforts, Saikia called for adequate shelter, tarpaulins and essential supplies for displaced families until permanent rehabilitation is completed.
