Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on Wednesday said the devastation caused by the recent floods in Assam was immense and warned that restoring normalcy would take time, while assuring flood-affected residents of complete support from the Centre.
Accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Nadda visited Nepalikhuti village along the Assam-Nagaland border in Sivasagar district, one of the worst-affected areas during the floods that struck the state on July 19.
After interacting with affected families, the Union minister told reporters that he had witnessed the extent of the destruction firsthand during his visit. He said the scale of damage in the flood-hit areas was enormous and that the recovery process would require considerable time.
Reassuring residents, Nadda said the Central government stood firmly with Assam during the crisis. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured the state that there would be no shortage of assistance from the Union government.
The Union minister said all necessary support, including financial assistance, rehabilitation measures, compensation and aid for property losses, would be extended to the affected people.
Assam continues to grapple with the aftermath of one of the most severe floods to hit the state in recent years. According to official figures, the death toll has risen to 89, while more than 1.22 lakh people remain affected across five districts despite floodwaters receding in several areas.
Authorities are also keeping a close watch on the situation amid concerns that overnight rainfall could trigger fresh flooding in vulnerable regions.
