Udalguri-Sonitpur, Aug 6: Assam Cabinet Minister and Mazbat MLA Charan Boro on Thursday visited flood-affected areas in the Orang region of Udalguri district to assess the damage caused by incessant rainfall and flash floods that have severely disrupted normal life across the area.
The floods, triggered by a surge of water flowing down from the Bhutan hills, inundated several revenue villages under the 47 Mazbat Legislative Assembly constituency. Extensive damage was reported to roads, approach roads, embankments, bridges and culverts, leaving many villages cut off from the rest of the district.
During his visit, Boro inspected some of the worst-affected areas, including Sonajuli, to take stock of the situation. He was accompanied by Benudhar Adhikari, Secretary of the Pachnoi-Cherfang BPF Block Committee, along with local representatives Saurav Saikia, Dhiman Sen, Maheswar Boro and others.
The minister later visited the damaged Sonajuli-Kathpuri connecting road along with Udalguri Deputy Commissioner Pulak Patgiri and Superintendent of Police Padmanav Baruah. He assured residents that the district administration would make every effort to restore temporary road connectivity to all affected areas at the earliest. He also said relief camps would be opened if the flood situation worsened.
Continuous rainfall over the past two days caused the Pagladia River to swell rapidly, triggering flash floods that affected nearly 50 revenue villages. Among the worst-hit areas are Fuhurabari, Daflapota, Kathpuri, Awnajuli, Majgaon, Gelabil, Bengenabari Jungle Block, Kadabil, Jingabil, Kharamkha and several other villages.
Floodwaters washed away numerous roads, village link roads and embankments, severely disrupting transportation across the region. All road connections to Kathpuri village have reportedly been snapped, isolating the locality.
Officials of the Public Works Department said the situation was being closely monitored and that temporary road connectivity would be restored as soon as floodwaters recede.
The floods have also submerged hundreds of bighas of paddy fields across the affected villages, raising concerns over significant crop losses and the impact on the livelihoods of farmers in the region.
