Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 6 expressed gratitude to the Vantara Foundation for assisting the state Forest Department in rescuing and providing relief to animals affected by the ongoing floods.
Drawing attention to the often-overlooked impact of floods on wildlife and livestock, Sarma said the disaster has affected more than 10 lakh livestock, while hundreds of wild animals have been swept away, with many others remaining stranded or missing.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister said the devastation suffered by animals and wildlife was one of the least discussed yet most distressing consequences of the floods.
He said the Assam Forest Department had been carrying out extensive rescue and relief operations, but the scale of the disaster made additional support essential. Sarma thanked the Vantara Foundation for deploying its specialised wildlife rescue teams and ambulance fleet to assist operations under the direction of the Assam Forest Department.
The Chief Minister also conveyed his appreciation to Anant Ambani for the initiative, stating that animal rescue during natural disasters often receives inadequate attention. He described the support extended by the foundation as a thoughtful and compassionate gesture.
According to official figures, this year’s floods have claimed at least 95 lives in Assam, while more than 1.6 lakh people continue to remain affected across the state.
