Raijor Dal leader and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the state government’s response to the recent floods, alleging that no separate flood relief assistance has been provided by the government so far.
Gogoi claimed that the assistance reaching flood-affected people had been provided through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), rather than through a separate flood relief package announced by the state government.
He alleged that Sarma had not personally contributed any money towards flood relief and accused the Chief Minister of insulting people who had voluntarily stepped forward to assist families affected by the floods.
Gogoi also accused Sarma of behaving “like a king”, escalating his criticism of the Chief Minister’s style of governance amid the ongoing political debate over the handling of the flood crisis.
The Raijor Dal leader further questioned the legality of a directive issued by the Chief Minister to the Assam Police, arguing that executive instructions cannot take precedence over constitutional principles.
Gogoi said that in a democracy, the Constitution remains the supreme source of law and that the words of an elected leader cannot override it.
His remarks come amid heightened political criticism of the Assam government’s management of the flood situation, with opposition parties raising questions over the adequacy and transparency of relief measures.
The Assam government has not yet issued a specific response to Gogoi’s allegations.
