Itanagar, Aug 12: The border situation between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh escalated on Wednesday as the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) launched an indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh from 5 am, while nine organisations enforced a 12-hour bandh in Assam’s Dhemaji district.
The TMPK-led blockade has disrupted movement along key routes connecting Assam with Arunachal Pradesh, with checkpoints stretching from Sadiya to Balipara reportedly blocked. Commercial and private vehicles travelling towards Arunachal Pradesh were left stranded on the Assam side of the border.
TMPK leaders said the economic blockade would continue indefinitely until those responsible for the recent border violence were brought to justice. The organisation has demanded the arrest of the police personnel allegedly involved in the firing incident at Mingmang Badati.
The protests follow the recent firing incident in which several Assamese villagers were injured. Protesters have alleged that the firing involved Nirak Agamle, a Deputy Superintendent of Police and the son of the Deputy Commissioner of Lower Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh. They have demanded his immediate arrest along with legal action against the personnel allegedly involved in the incident.
At the same time, nine organisations called a 12-hour bandh across Dhemaji, bringing normal activities to a halt. The participating groups included the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP), Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), Bir Lachit Sena and Tai-Phake organisations.
Markets, business establishments, educational institutions and financial institutions remained closed during the bandh, while public transport was also affected as organisations expressed solidarity with those injured in the border firing.
Local leaders have warned that the blockade would remain in place until concrete legal action is taken against those accused in the firing incident. The developments have added to tensions along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border following the recent violence.
