Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu have appealed for peace, harmony and mutual respect amid tensions along the inter-state border following a recent firing incident and protests.
Khandu welcomed Sarma’s appeal and said the two states shared longstanding ties based on history, friendship and brotherhood. He urged people to resolve differences through dialogue and mutual understanding and not allow the current situation to affect relations between the communities.
Sarma said Assam and Arunachal Pradesh had settled most of their border differences through dialogue and friendship. He said only 52 villages remained under discussion and both governments would continue negotiations to resolve the remaining issues.
The appeals came as an economic blockade continued in the Silapathar-Likabali area following the firing incident, disrupting movement between the two states. Stone-pelting was also reported, with police and CRPF personnel coming under attack.
The border firing left 12 people injured and heightened tensions between members of the Mising and Galo communities. Authorities have urged residents and protesters to exercise restraint as efforts continue to restore normalcy and maintain peace along the affected border areas.
