Udalguri-Sonitpur, Aug 14: Konjit Medhi, the son of farmer couple Golok and Parul Medhi of Gelabil village in Udalguri district, has attracted attention for creating a traditional Assamese mask measuring just 1.4 cm, placing his work on the path towards a potential world record.
Despite scoring 81 per cent in the HSLC examination and 91 per cent in Higher Secondary, Konjit chose to pursue his longstanding interest in fine arts rather than conventional professional courses. He is currently studying at the Government College of Art & Craft, Basistha, Guwahati.
The miniature mask draws inspiration from the traditional mask-making heritage of Majuli, a prominent centre of Assam’s Sattriya culture. Through the unusually small artwork, Konjit has sought to present the traditional craft in a highly detailed and meticulous form.
His interest in art began during childhood, when he also developed a talent for drawing and making science models. Alongside his studies and creative pursuits, he helped his parents with household and agricultural work.
Konjit’s latest creation has earned appreciation from people in the region and highlighted his efforts to promote Assam’s traditional art. His work has also brought attention to his native Gelabil village and Udalguri district as he pursues recognition on a wider platform.
