Guwahati, August 14: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday paid tribute to those who lost their lives during the violence and displacement that followed the Partition of India, saying the scars of the division would never be forgotten.
Marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Sarma said the Partition had been “forced upon” India by the Muslim League and remembered the “countless innocent souls” who died during the period.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister said the country would continue to remember those who lost their lives and pledged that no one would be allowed to harm the nation again.
The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre has observed August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day since 2021 to commemorate the victims of the violence and mass displacement associated with Partition.
India will celebrate its Independence Day on Saturday.
