The Assam Police observed a “Day of Mourning” at its headquarters in Guwahati on Sunday, August 16, to remember the innocent children and others killed in a militant bomb blast during Independence Day celebrations in Dhemaji in 2004.
The blast occurred on August 15, 2004, when people had gathered for the Independence Day programme in Dhemaji.
Senior police officers and personnel from different ranks took part in the observance. During the programme, participants pledged to uphold peace and social harmony and promote mutual understanding among people from all sections of society.
The pledge, administered by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Administration) Pranab Jyoti Goswami, also reaffirmed the force’s commitment to combating forces that threaten human life and values.
The annual observance was held to honour those who lost their lives in the 2004 blast and reaffirm the Assam Police’s commitment to peace, communal harmony and the protection of human life.
