Shillong, August 17: Movement of people and vehicles in Laitumkhrah eased on Monday after street vendors were relocated to designated vending spaces arranged by the government.
Officials from the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB), accompanied by police personnel, visited the area to oversee the relocation of vendors to Brightstarwell Playground in Barik and the SMB Parking Lot at Dhankheti.
The vendors did not resist the relocation during the drive, and no stalls were seen along the Laitumkhrah area. The development came after some vendors had opposed the relocation in recent days.
Members of the Laitumkhrah Dorbar Shnong, women’s organisations and youth organisations were present to help maintain peace and prevent any untoward incident.
SMB CEO K.C. Boro said all street vendors in Laitumkhrah had agreed to move to the designated vending spaces.
Local MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh also visited the area to assess the situation.
