Assam Excise Department Seizes 123 Cartons of Liquor in Interstate Smuggling Probe

The Assam Excise Department has seized 123 cartons of beer and Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) allegedly meant for sale only in Meghalaya, uncovering a suspected interstate liquor smuggling network along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

The consignment was intercepted by the Dimoria Excise Circle at Sonapur Toll Plaza after officials stopped and searched a commercial truck. The subsequent investigation led officers to a cargo warehouse at Moraxali in Guwahati’s Paltan Bazar.

A raid at the warehouse reportedly uncovered CCTV footage indicating that the consignment had been loaded from the premises. Two warehouse employees and the truck driver were taken into custody, with the driver later remanded to judicial custody.

The operation was conducted under senior excise officer Pritam Purkaistha and supervised by Kamrup Metro Superintendent of Excise Debajit Nath. The department later felicitated members of the Dimoria team for the seizure.

The Excise Department said the operation highlighted the role of intelligence-led enforcement and coordination between field officers and investigators. Further investigation is underway to trace the wider supply chain.
