BJP Sribhumi seeks action against Hafiz Rashid over alleged attempts to derail murder probe

SRIBHUMI, August 18: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Sribhumi Zila Committee has submitted a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking immediate custodial interrogation and strict legal action against Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury in connection with the investigation into the murder of local social worker Bikash Dhar.

According to the memorandum, Dhar, a resident of Chhagalmowa village under Bazaricherra Police Station, went missing on August 12 after leaving home on his motorcycle. His body, bearing injury marks, was recovered from an abandoned structure in Jogichherra on August 14.

Bazaricherra Police Station Case No. 56/2026 was subsequently registered under Sections 61(2) and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to criminal conspiracy and murder. The BJP said police had apprehended suspected individuals as part of the investigation.

The BJP alleged that Choudhury subsequently engaged in provocative activities and made attempts to misrepresent facts and influence the investigation, which it claimed could create communal tension in the sensitive border region.

The party urged the Chief Minister to direct the police to interrogate Choudhury to ascertain the alleged motives and circumstances behind his activities and take preventive and legal measures to maintain public order.

It also sought an impartial and speedy investigation into Dhar’s murder without political, communal or external interference.
