Jorhat, August 20: Jorhat Police have arrested Ankit Das, one of the prime accused in the mysterious death of a young woman, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four.
Das, a resident of Macharhat, was arrested from Milan Nagar on Thursday by a team from Jorhat Sadar Police Station. Police were questioning him to establish his alleged role in the case. He had reportedly been absconding since the woman’s death.
Police had earlier arrested two young women and alleged main accused Aryan Goswami. A court subsequently remanded the three to three days of police custody. The two women had allegedly told the media that Das supplied drugs to the deceased, an allegation being examined by investigators.
The investigation centres on a flat at Gauri Enclave in Dahabara Chuk, where police suspect an alleged drug party was held on Independence Day. The flat was reportedly owned by Goswami’s mother, Jharna Goswami.
Police have also questioned Jharna Goswami and Khushi Das and allowed them to return home after serving notices. Goswami has claimed that the woman died after allegedly consuming an excessive quantity of drugs and that attempts were made to save her. The claim has not been independently established.
Police are continuing to question the arrested accused and examine the events at the flat to determine the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and the alleged role of those arrested.
